The available projections do not show that data centers will absorb all of the world’s electricity, but they indicate a rapid rise in their consumption and potentially significant local effects on networks. In its report published on 16 April 2026, the International Energy Agency estimates that the global demand for data centers will increase by 17% by 2025. The global demand for power centers primarily devoted to artificial intelligence would have increased by 50% over the same year. The IAE’s central scenario on the total consumption of data centers from 485 TWh in 2025 to about 950 TWh in 2030. This would represent around 3% of the global demand for power centers at this time, far from the totality. The consumption of IAE-oriented centers would triple the period.

FACT CHECK — Will data centers absorb all global electricity?
No. The AIE projects about 3% of global electricity demand in 2030. Their growth is nevertheless rapid and can create strong local constraints.
